Our Model

Strengthening Community Midwifery Through a Collaborative Birth Center Model

Federal Way Birth Center (FWBC) is a community-based birth center committed to expanding access to midwifery care while supporting the growth and sustainability of the midwifery workforce in Washington State. As the only birth center in Washington owned and operated by a Black midwife, FWBC serves as both a clinical site and an incubator for the next generation of community birth workers.

Our innovative model functions as a cooperative space where newly licensed, rural, and independent midwives can establish and grow their practices without the financial barriers that often prevent entry into community-based maternity care. Participating midwives are provided fully equipped clinic space, medical supplies, administrative support, and access to professional mentorship. To reduce startup costs and support long-term sustainability, FWBC does not charge rent during a midwife’s first two years of practice.

In addition to providing physical space, FWBC offers an Easy Access Clinic, which serves as a safety net for independent midwives and their clients. The clinic ensures continuity of care when a midwife experiences illness, family emergencies, professional leave, or travel obligations. This collaborative approach helps maintain uninterrupted prenatal and postpartum care for families while reducing professional isolation among independent providers.
